Devils Tower National Monument
Devils Tower was the prime destination for first half of my road trip in the spring of 2019. Ever since watching “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, I’ve had a desire to visit the monument in person. That desire was only strengthened by the stories I’d heard told by friends and family who had been there over the years. Despite the hype I’d built-up for this destination, it delivered, in spades.
The park itself is easy to visit because there isn’t so much to do there that you have to make tough decisions. There are two trails that circle the tower: the Tower Trail and the Red Beds Trail. The former is a relatively easy mile on a paved walkway that’s accessible to anyone. The latter is a bit more rugged and it takes you far enough away from the base to give you beautiful views of the tower from every angle. This aspect of the Red Beds Trail was interesting to me because it never occurred to me that almost every picture I’d ever seen of the tower was from a single angle and it looks significantly different from the sides and rear. Both trails combine to about 4 miles in length.
Besides the trails, there’s Prairie Dog City which is passed on the way up to the tower’s visitor center. There are signs instructing you not to feed the animals, but, based-on how boldly they approached me when I stopped to take a few pictures, my guess is that they get their fill of Cheetos and peanuts on a daily basis.

- Selfie Do you have a picture of yourself during one of the top five happiest moments of your life? This is one of mine.
- Side View from Red Beds Trail Every picture I'd ever seen was from the front of the tower (90-degrees counter-clockwise from here). It was fun seeing it change as I hiked around it.
- Red Beds Trail Thus, the name.
- Devils Tower From the Tower Trail at the base of the monument.
- Devil Horns for Devils Tower
- Prairie Dog Town There were signs telling you not to feed the prairie dogs, but, given how fearless this guy was (he ran right up to me), I'm guessing they're fed plenty.
- Sunset Sad to leave, but I had to get going. Not much light left.

- Approaching Devils Tower View Location One of the most exciting moments of my life, watching the tower get closer and closer. The Wagner soundtrack only made it more epic.
- Devils Tower with Dramatic Music and Panning View Location Let's have a little fun with this. To be honest, the panning base creates a lot of noise, which is why I've added so much music to these bits. I'd much rather have the ambient sound. This was shot from the Red Beds Trail and was actually the most peaceful place I'd ever been up to this point in my life.
- Red Beds Trail (Devils Tower) View Location This clip features my favorite part of hiking the Red Beds Trail around Devils Tower: Seeing different, breath-taking views of the tower as you make your way around it.

- Leaving Devils Tower View Location A final panoramic shot as I leave Devils Tower while the sun sets. I hope to return and stay overnight sooner than later.

- Deer on Red Beds Trail These deer must be used to people because they didn't appear to want to move.
