Getting Going

My brother and I didn’t waste much time getting going in the morning. Despite only having a hand towel with me, I decided to take a shower because I was feeling really grimey and hadn’t brought enough clean shirts, which really bothered me given how heavy my pack was the entire trip. After we got packed, my brother suggested getting going before it got too hot, which was a good idea because it was supposed to hit the mid-90s today.

The hike to the dock wasn’t that bad because my pack was relatively light after ditching any water I had left on me. It was a fun walk as well, allowing me to really check-out the cottages we passed along the way. We arrived pretty much right on time and only had to wait about ten minutes before the ferry left for the mainland.

Liberty Aviation Museum

On the way to the dock on Catawba, my brother spotted the Liberty Aviation Museum near the highway and we agreed to stop visit it on the way back. We arrived just about the time it opened and had the place to ourselves. It featured mostly WWII-era planes and vehicles, as well as island-based aviation. We spent about an hour walking around, deciding to pass on eating at the diner attached to the museum, and instead visit a Mexican restaurant when we got home.

A Drowsy Drive Home

My brother and I both had a hard time staying awake on the final drive home. To be honest, I remember always being sleepy on the drive back from the island and I’m not entirely sure why it was always like that. Maybe the quality of sleep was bad or maybe being on the island just made you feel relaxed. In any case, we made it back home in one piece and had a good time having Mexican with his family in Medina.

Overall, the trip exceeded even the greatest of expectations. While I thought it would be a fun trip, I figured it would also be melancholic at times because of my history with the islands. But those thoughts only came up a few times and were short lived. There are plans to return for a similar visit in the fall, preferably once the leaves start changing.
